Greeting Fellow Titans –
November is here and along with the cold weather come a number of our favorite Northview traditions. Please take a few moments to go through the items contained in this newsletter and make plans accordingly. Some of the items are reminders of scheduled events, while others carry important information about changes in the school calendar.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the month will be International Night on November 12th.  This event is a delight to all the senses and, for $5.00 ($7.00 at the door), one of the best deals of the century! This year’s theme is “Starry Night” and we promise a delectable sampling of cuisines from around the world paired with international cultural exhibits and first class performances by various student groups for a night to remember.
In order to accommodate our audience, the International Night performances will have two different show times.  The first show will start at: 7:00 p.m. (food tasting 7:55 to 8:25) and the second show will begin at 8:30 (food tasting 7:05 to 7:45).  The booths for food tasting will be located in the cafeteria. For more information, contact Assistant Principal James Williams. I hope to see you all there.
During homeroom, we gave a letter to each child to take home. The US Department of Education has developed a new way to report race and ethnicity and we need to make sure that your child’s information has been reported accurately. Your student’s information as it is entered in our system is on this letter. Please take a moment to check to make sure it is correct. No response is necessary if the data is correctly reported. If a change needs to be made, please do so on the letter and return it to the front office by November 20, 2009.
As always, feel free to contact me if I can ever be of assistance (

Parent of a Junior, Sophomore, or Freshman Student
(Class of 2011, 2012, 2013)

The 12 week progress reports have been handed out today to students during their homeroom. Students are asked to bring these progress reports home and share them with you.  I hope that this does not catch you by surprise and that you have been contacted at some point by your student's teacher(s), have seen the grade on Parent Connect, and/or your student has told  you about this. We have approximately 5 weeks remaining in the semester so please speak to your student and the teacher to see what can be done to help them bring up the grade, if you have not done so already. In addition, many students are taking numerous graduation requirements in their schedule and need to pass them to be on track.

If you have not been contacted by your student's teacher, please let your child's counselor know. If your student comes home tonight and has "lost" their progress report, please send your child's counselor an email and I will send you an electronic copy. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Remember that the best source of information is going to come from the teacher as I am not aware of the reasons as to why your student may be struggling. I will be calling most students in over the next week or so to touch base with them and offer them some encouragement and advice as to how to go about bringing their grade(s) up. If your student is in an Honors or AP course and is struggling to keep up or is failing, we may need to talk before the semester ends about the possibility of having them drop down or out of the course. This will be based on the final grade and teacher recommendation.

Feel free to contact your child's counselor with any questions or concerns that you may have. They have about 5 weeks to bring up or maintain or raise their grades as needed. Specific questions on how your student can improve their grade should be directed to the teacher.

Again, feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Thank you,
The Counseling Department

Students are assigned to counselors according to the first letter of their last name:

BRING YOUR MOM TO SCHOOL DAY is Monday, November 16th. We welcome all moms (or significant females) to come and spend the day with their student. Sign in tables will be available at each entrance before the start of the day and any late arrivers should check in at the front office. Feel free to join your child in his/her morning activities, either having breakfast in the Food Court or just hanging out in the hall with friends. Moms will be called to the auditorium during 3rd period to have a brief meeting with the administrative staff. This will afford you the opportunity to meet us as well as to ask any questions you might have about daily activities. We realize that some of you may have to leave after that meeting, but those who can stay are welcome to return to class and spend the rest of the day here. In years past, this has been a well-attended program and I hope you will take advantage of it. PARKING WILL BE TIGHT, SO CARPOOLING IS RECOMMENDED. Please, do not park in any numbered spaces or along red curbs.
VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLIES will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11th. For the eighth year running, our JROTC program will present a salute to the current and former members of our armed services. We would love to have any veterans in the community come and be recognized for their contributions while enjoying a wonderful and meaningful program involving the JROTC cadets as well as the Northview band and chorus. So that we can make sure to acknowledge your presence, please contact 1st Sgt. John Adams ( if you are planning on attending.
CALENDAR CHANGES: Because of a change in the enrollment process, the Open House for Prospective Students scheduled for February 7, 2010 has been cancelled. This Sunday afternoon event was traditionally held for 8th graders interested in attending Northview. The scheduling process will be completed much earlier this year, so an academic open house will be scheduled for an evening in January to answer questions you might have. Please stay tuned for more information.
GRADUATION has been listed on the school calendar as May 22nd or 23rd.  We are still negotiating for a different venue and will let you know as soon as possible which date has been selected.

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS Balfour will be here during lunch on Thursday and Friday, November 12th and 13th to collect graduation announcement orders. Orders can also be placed at their website:
CONGRATULATIONS to our new Administrative Assistant, Kibbey Crumbley.
