learner's permit & driver's license

You may not apply for or keep a driver's permit or license if you withdraw from school (if you are under age 18), have a total of 10 unexc used absences or have any conduct infractions.

If you receive a traffic citation after you receive your license, your license may be suspended. Paying the citation fee does not indicate that your license will not be suspended.

To Obtain A Learner's Permit - Class CP:

  • You must be at least 15 years of age.
  • An original birth certificate, certified copy of the birth certificate (with embossed state seal), certificate of birth registration, certified copy of court records (adoption, name changes), certified naturalization records, immigration card or a Valid Passport needs to be presented.
  • Applicants must know their social security number. The number is required to issue a permit.
  • The applicant will be required to pass an eye and knowledge test.
  • A parent or legal guardian with a Georgia License or ID Card will have to sign for you. The legal guardian must have a certified guardianship paper from court or adoption paper with embossed court seal.
  • A Georgia DMVS Certificate of Attendance form must be signed and notarized from your school. It is only valid for 30 days. All applicants under the age of 18 not enrolled in school must provide a GED diploma, high school diploma, or an attendance form from your local Board of Education if you are enrolled in an approved home school program.
  • Any Out of State Learner's permit or ID Card must be surrendered to issue a Georgia Permit.
  • When driving, there must be a licensed driver at least 21-years-old in the front seat with him or her at all times.
  • The license fee is $10.00 cash only.
  • The permit is valid for 24 months.

To Obtain Your First Driver's License - Class D:

  • A valid learner's license must be held for one year and one day from its issuance. It must be surrendered at the time of testing.
  • Appointments for on-the-road tests are mandatory and should be made up to 90 days in advance. Reservation numbers are (678) 413-8500 select option 3 or toll-free (866) 754-3687 (if dialing from an area code outside the metro-Atlanta area).
  • Applicants must know their social security number. The number is required to issue a permit.
  • Applicants must present the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) card. For more information about ADAP, contact the Georgia State Patrol. at (404) 669-2942 or (800) 245-4410.
  • A parent or legal guardian must sign an affidavit at the time of examination that the applicant has had at least 40 hours of on-the-road driving training either privately or 20 hours of on-the-road training in conjunction with a driver's education class.
  • A parent or legal guardian with a Georgia License or ID Card will have to sign for you. The legal guardian must have a certified guardianship paper from court or adoption paper with embossed court seal.
  • A Georgia DMVS Certificate of Attendance form must be signed and notarized from your school. It is only valid for 30 days.   • The vehicle the driver is testing in must be properly insured, registered, have a valid tag and must pass a safety inspection. You will be asked to show a valid insurance card. You may not take the test in a rental car.
  • The license fee is $10.00 cash only.

New State of Georgia Rules for a driver's license Certificate of Attendance:

The Certificates of Attendance has been changed by the State of Georgia and must now be signed by an administrator. An administrator must check the applying student's previous year's attendance and discipline files. Students that complete their Certificate of Attendance by 8:30 a.m. will be able to pick up the completed from by 4:00 pm. the following day.

If a student was not in a Fulton County school the previous school year the student must apply for the Certificate of Attendance from the previous school.
