Health and Physical Education Course Description

General Health (17.0110001) Semester
This course fulfills the requirement for graduation and the State of Georgia Drug and Alcohol Awareness component required for obtaining a driver’s license. Course introduces personal health, decision-making skills, mental health, emotions, stress, alcohol, drug and tobacco use/abuse, nutrition, First Aid/CPR and sex education. Prerequisite: This course is recommended for 9th graders, but can be taken at other levels.
Graduation Requirement.

Personal Fitness (36.0510001) Semester
The course introduces weight training, cardiovascular training, and fitness games. Fitness components are assessed, including body fat, a personal work out plan is developed and implemented and a healthy nutrition plan is designed. Prerequisite: 10th –12th graders only. Graduation Requirement.

Advanced Personal Fitness (36.0510002) Semester
A variety of activities will be used to encourage each student to work at their Target Heart Rate Zone. Weight lifting and flexibility exercises will be included in this course. Prerequisite: Personal Fitness

General Physical Education I (36.0110001) Semester
Introduces the rules, skills and strategy of basketball, volleyball, speedball (combination of football, basketball, and soccer), gatorball (combination of soccer and football), team handball, badminton, Frisbee games, flag football, field hockey, tennis, and soccer. Prerequisite: none

General Physical Education II (36.0120001) Semester
Introduces the rules and skills of basketball, flag football, badminton, team handball, tennis and soccer. Team play is also emphasized. Prerequisite: none

General Physical Education III (36.0130001) Semester
Introduces the rules and skills of softball, volleyball, badminton, basketball, Frisbee games, field hockey and speedball. Team and tournament play is emphasized. Prerequisite: none

Weight Training I (36.0540001) Semester
Designed to enhance the student’s muscular strength and endurance. The students will gain knowledge in fitness concepts such as frequency, intensity, duration, sets, and repetitions. Cardiovascular training is also included in this course. Prerequisite: none

Weight Training II (36.0540002) Semester
This course is for the serious student/athlete who has a desire to work on total body strength and fitness. The student/athlete will be required to perform all major lifts and will be given a weightlifting program designed to build strength and muscle size. Prerequisite: Weight Training I

Weight Training III (36.0540003) Semester
This course is designed for the serious student/athlete involved in a school or club sport activity. Each student/ athlete will have an understanding of power lifting techniques, improving in muscular strength and endurance and will be given a weight training program that is specific to their sport. Cardiovascular training is also included in this course. Prerequisite: Weight Training II.

Lifetime Sports (36.0220001) Semester
Introduces the rules, skills, etiquette and strategy of tennis, pickle ball (combination of tennis and badminton) and golf. Team and tournament play is emphasized. Prerequisite: none

Recreational Games (36.0270001) Semester
Introduces the rules and skills of ping-pong, badminton, bowling, pickle ball, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Team and tournament play is emphasized. Prerequisite: none

Physical Conditioning (36.0520001) Semester
Advanced Physical Conditioning (36.0520002) Semester
This class is designed for students who are highly skilled in aerobic fitness and weight training. Students will gain knowledge of health-related fitness concepts and participate in a personal weight training and conditioning program. Prerequisite: Personal Fitness

Outdoor Education (36.0250001) Semester
Introduces the basics of hiking, camping, cooking over a fire, conservation, archery, rock climbing and orienteering. Students will have the opportunity to engage in enrichment activities such as camping trips, rock climbing and white water rafting. Prerequisite: Juniors/Seniors only
