Wilson Creek Trip
Northview German and French students planned lessons in their high school classrooms in preparation to teach their world language to elementary school children at Wilson Creek Elementary. Each group taught for approximately 30 minutes with singing, dancing, games, sweets and many other creative means. They generously gave each child a pencil with a message on it expressed in the target language. Both the high schoolers and the elementary school children had a memorable learning experience. Sponsors for the trip are Catherine Francisse, French Teacher and Dot Kemptner, German Teacher.

The Governor's Honors Program is a 6 week summer institution for 10th or 11th graders who are nominated by a teacher, who go through an application and interview process on county and state levels, and who show aptitude and enthusiasm for a particular subject, German, for our students. Students should be able to prove that they go beyond the classroom activities for their love of the subject and need to commit to a six week program at Valdosta State University. Northview High School's German Program has nominated and sent to state competition Colin Korbisch and Soleil Robichaud. We are very proud of them! Best of luck!

Trip to Helen, Georgia 2007
Northview High School German students traveled to Helen, Georgia to celebrate the Oktoberfest this past October. Mrs. Dot Kemptner was the sponsor of this cultural experience. The German students created and hunted internet scavenger hunts directed at learning about the Munich Oktoberfest and also the city of Helen, Georgia. Upon arrival in Helen, assigned groups created a city scavenger hunt, then became scavengers themselves of their classmates' hunts. Kay Mathena, the head of the Chamber of Commerce for Helen, and many wonderful residents of Helen, organized an authentic German lunch for the students. The Austrian Group, The Stratton Mountain Boys entertained and interacted with the entire group of approximately 70 students and adults. Not surprisingly ALL for the first time ever, participated in the world famous Chicken Dance! Comments from the fieldtrip evaluations written by the students indicated that they enjoyed the music, dancing and fudge the most, then the funnel cakes and German architecture. Many had been there for the first time in their lives and appreciated getting to know Georgia better.

During National German Week, Oct. 2-8, 2006 , German students involved themselves in German Trivia for the entire student body to win prizes. German Trivia was placed all around the school by German students. National German Week helps promote German at NHS and involves everyone, in order to bring Germany closer to the U.S.

The National German Test is an opportunity for German students in the nation to compare their skills with other students of German. Students who receive a 90 or above are eligible for a trip to Germany for 3 weeks, all expenses paid, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Nationally, Alex Henke won a trip this past summer and enjoyed her experiences in Germany! Congratulations! In 2006-07 44 of Northview's students took the test in December . Good luck!

Students who scored in the 80 th percentile or above are:

Student Activites in the German Program:

German tradition is that all German students who begin school for the first day in the first grade, bring a Schultüte from home and open it in the classroom. These cones are usually filled with school supplies, sweets and various surprises. They are usually made out of vinyl or vinyl coated cardboard and can range in price from 2-20 Euros. Taking a picture of the child with their prize is a popular tradition.

German I students have constructed their
personal Schultüten for the first time!

German 3 Honors

Each year the Northview High School PTSA offers grants to faculty to enhance their educational programs. The PTSA awarded funds to the German program for a project for upper level German students to express what learning German has meant to them and how it has influenced their lives.

The assignment was to write 250 words in German about at least three important symbols of German, German class, Germany or anything related to the language that impacted their lives the most. They then had to paint these symbols on their personal ceiling tile.

Ms. Mikki Kim from the Northview Art Department taught the class some basic drawing techniques and gave them various ideas.

Finally, the students presented their masterpieces to the class, in German, and the tiles then went into the ceilings. Ms. Kemptner also taught this class to educators at the FLAG Conference in St. Simons Island, Ga. in 2005.
